Pfizer Inc. has agreed to pay $2.3 billion to settle a government investigation into the marketing of the withdrawn Bextra pain medicine and 13 other drugs. The size of the settlement stems from the government’s determination that Pfizer was a repeat offender, according to Reuters. The settlement is believed to be the largest in history related to the improper marketing of prescriptions drugs. Jeremy Pelofsky and Ransdell Pierson, Reuters 09/02/2009

Case Could Signal Future of Paxil Birth Defect Claims
A Philadelphia court is scheduled to play host next week to what may be the first of three bellwether trials over claims that the antidepressant drug Paxil causes birth defects, Bloomberg reports. According to plaintiff claims, GlaxoSmithKline, the world’s second-largest drug maker, knew the drug posed a risk but failed to warn consumers. The trial will likely indicate how more than 600 other Paxil birth defect lawsuits will fare, legal experts say. Sophia Pearson and Margaret Cronin Fisk, Bloomberg 09/11/2009
