Glaxo Reports Payouts from Paxil Cases
Three major personal injury litigations over the antidepressant Paxil – suicide, birth defects and withdraw cases – have cost GlaxoSmithKline Plc around $1 billion since the drug hit the market in 1993, Bloomberg.com reports. According to Bloomberg.com, GlaxoSmithKline has settled 450 suicide cases for about $390 million and 600 birth defect cases for unspecified amounts. For the past six years, GlaxoSmithKline has faced claims in U.S. courts that some Paxil users were subjected to an undisclosed, higher risk for suicide and birth defects. UPS Settles Wage Class Action
UPS Supply Chain Solutions has agreed to pay $12.8 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by workers who claimed they were wrongly identified as independent contractors. The mediated agreement calls for UPS to distribute the settlement to about 660 potential class members in California and nationwide. Infant Deaths Prompt Baby Hammock Recall
Federal safety officials have announced the recall of about 24,000 baby hammocks following the deaths of two infants. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, babies can become trapped and could suffocate against the sides of the mesh and fabric Amby Baby Motion Beds. Contamination Leads to Slim-Fast Beverage Recall
The maker of a popular diet drink has issued a nationwide recall of its canned beverages over potential bacterial contamination. Unilever said the recall covers all canned Slim-Fast products sold in cartons or individually. It remains unclear exactly what caused the contamination.
