FDA Issues Warning on Diet Pills
The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid a variety of diet pills sold primarily on the Internet. According to the FDA, the pills contain unlisted ingredients, including powerful appetite suppressants and a potential carcinogen. Airborne Reaches Settlement with States
Airborne Health has agreed to pay $7 million to 32 states to settle claims that the dietary supplement company misled consumers about the benefits of its purported cold-prevention products. The company will also discontinue claims relating its products to cold prevention. Airborne had previously reached a $30 million settlement with a class of consumers and the Federal Trade Commission. Seizure Meds to Carry New Warning
Federal regulators announced Tuesday that a popular group of seizure medications must carry stronger warnings about an increased risk of suicide. The new language comes about a year after the Food and Drug Administration first announced that patients taking the drugs were more likely to commit suicide than those taking a placebo. Antiepileptic drugs affected by the new warnings include GlaxoSmithKline's Lamictal, Johnson & Johnson's Topamax and Pfizer's Lyrica. Catherine Larkin and Justin Blum, Bloomberg 12/16/2008
